Florida sits on top of one of the world’s great aquifers, and where it surfaces you get the springs — hundreds of them, pushing out water that stays a constant 72 degrees all year. Clear as glass and ringed by cypress and cabbage palm, they are the state’s best-kept secret.
The springs never change temperature, which makes them refreshing in summer and downright balmy on a cool winter day. Float the runs at Rainbow, Ichetucknee or Ginnie, snorkel over the boils, or paddle a clear-bottom kayak above the eelgrass.
From roughly November through March, hundreds of manatees leave the cooling Gulf and gather in the warm springs around Crystal River and Blue Spring. It is one of the only places in the world you can legally swim alongside them — a bucket-list Florida morning.
